A glimpse into the world of modern tobacco farming

By Cecelia Smith-Schoenwalder and Barbara Bent

First-generation farmers Robert Mills and Bob Harris grow tobacco in Callands and Chatham, Va. They discuss recent developments in the tobacco industry and ways they diversify their crop to stay on top of current demand. Taxes may not directly affect the growers, but it is crucial, farmers say, that the tax remains low to encourage consumption of their product. “I hope Virginia keeps the tax low,” said Mills. “Don’t judge yourself by other states.”
